Services to Youth, cont’d

Building on our foundational Services to Youth work while transitioning to a new way of living during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Greater Wayne County Chapter has expanded our youth support to a more holistic and comprehensive support of families.  In partnership with the University of Detroit’s TRIO Upward Bound Program, we will support students from low-income, single-parent homes or students struggling with physical and sexual abuse, homelessness, neglect and an overall lack of parental engagement. As we all know, these daily challenges interfere with a child’s ability to be successful in high school or at the college level. The joint program activates virtual programming designed to provide academic and college preparation support, study skills, mentoring, standardized testing support, public speaking skills, civic and community engagement, goal setting, time management, entrepreneurship, as well as physical and mental health awareness education.

We are motivated to provide critical, integrated, holistic Services to Youth by the words of the great children’s advocate Marian Wright Edelman, who said, “the question is not whether we can afford to invest in every child; it is whether we can afford not to.”
